Even renting books is expensive. Thanks goodness for torrents though. LOL Does anybody want a list of sites to search for textbooks they might not need to buy?
So far, textbooknova has been my best friend and my only friend. Also try Chegg, an app for your iOS or Android phone! I haven't tried it yet. It lets you rent!

I am typically very antipiracy. That said what textbook publishers are basically raping students because they can. What I hate the most is when the school makes the book and it looks like a cheap piece of shit and they still want over $100. They're still raping you and now the school is directly profiting off of it.

Good to hear! I found two books I needed for free in the form of a torrent and one from a file hosting site. I'm confident now that Chegg can be a place to compare prices with Amazon for book rental.

If you can't download them, Amazon also has text books. You can then sell it back to them for nearly 50 to 70% of the original value. Last semester I spent 150 bucks on textbooks(and that was because I need to buy a 90 dollar lab notebook).

I used to just buy them used, then peel off the Avery UPC label at the end of the semester so they wouldn't scan as previously sold second-hand, most of the time, I'd break even. That, and there was a store near campus owned by some Nigerians that sold soft cover international editions imported from Africa that were pretty cheap.

Purdue University has a giant campus wide file sharing server that you can only access through campus internet. Only way you got in trouble was if you downloaded a ton of stuff. I downloaded 4oo GB of media my last day in the dorms :).
Also, Chegg has solutions to text book problems. Odd numbered problems are usually free but evens you have to pay for. Well worth splitting an account with your friends. Just be careful, I've had a wrong solution or two and when the whole class gets it wrong the TA starts getting suspicious :).
